World’s first Bitcoin-funded play comes to Trafalgar Studios

The world’s first cryptocurrency-funded play is coming to the Trafalgar Studios this year.

Silk Road (How to Buy Drugs Online) by Alex Oates made history in 2014 when the crowdfunder was met by an anonymous donation of Bitcoin, allowing him to stage the show at Edinburgh Fringe and VAULT Festival.

Inspired by interviews with real online drug vendors, Oates’ piece explores the dangers and excitements of an unmonitored Dark Web and its impact on a teenage boy trying to find his way in the world.

The story follows Bruce Blakemore (played by Josh Barrow), a young Geordie techie who finds himself and his nan drawn into an internet underworld of pirates and gangsters.

Oates said: “Back in 2014, Bitcoin was a bit of a novelty so I couldn’t be more thrilled that Silk Road (How to Buy Drugs Online), which was initially made possible through an anonymous donation of Bitcoin, is back with a run at Trafalgar Studios this summer. It seems clear that Bitcoin is here to stay and it was a great honour to be the first play funded by cryptocurrency – it undoubtedly won’t be the last.”

The show, directed by Dominic Shaw, will run at Trafalgar Studios August 7- September 1,
